Short tour description
Head north from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway, the only route connecting Georgia to Russia through the majestic Caucasus Mountains. Your first stop is Zhinvali Reservoir, a hydroelectric dam on the Aragvi River. Despite being man-made, the reservoir blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, enchanting visitors with its striking turquoise waters. As you approach the shore, you’ll notice the ruins of a church, a remnant of a settlement that was relocated due to the dam’s construction.
Next, visit the Ananuri Fortress, renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views. Built by the Dukes of Aragvi, the fortress dates back to the 13th century. From there, head to Gudauri, a popular ski resort nestled in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The resort’s slopes rise far above the tree line, offering stunning alpine vistas.
Continue your journey to the Treaty of Georgievsk Monument, erected in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk and the enduring friendship between Georgia and Russia. Inside the monument, a large tile mural encircles the structure, depicting significant events from Georgian history. Finally, visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, located at the foot of Mount Kazbek. This historic church has long been a key stop for travelers on the route between Georgia and Russia. After a day of exploration, return to Tbilisi.
